Charlie glanced around the room, ignoring the other guests at Harry and Severus' wedding as he scoped out the talent. His eyes were drawn to a brunette; trousers hugging a firm arse, hair deliciously tousled, smile genuine and eyes wide.
Leaning across the table, Charlie caught Ron's attention, dragging it from a yet-again-heavily-pregnant Hermione. "Who's that bloke talking to George?"
Charlie nodded and pushed his attention back to Neville. A strange feeling in the pit of his stomach compelled him to stand up and walk over as George left. "Hi, Neville, right?"
Neville smiled. ”Yeah, and you're Charlie, right?"
Ever since the wedding, Neville had been bumping into Charlie everywhere. Or maybe he was just noticing the stocky, muscular redhead more. Either way, Neville was glad of the redhead's help when he left the Apothecary with his arms full of potions for his plants.
"Need a hand?"
"That'd be brilliant, thanks."
They talked about everything and nothing on the walk back to Neville's townhouse, and when they reached the door Neville shot a shy smile at Charlie. "Would you like to come in for coffee?"
"Is that the caffeinated type, or the other type...?"
Neville blushed, and opened the door.
Charlie knew Neville was an old romantic at heart, so he researched courting. He wanted to do right by Neville, and that meant being the perfect gentleman. Charlie took Neville on dates and walked him to his front door afterwards. He sourced rare plants and bought them for his brunette. He used his contacts in the handling business to ensure Neville always had a supply of Dragon's Blood, because one of its twelve properties was the ability to cure any botanical sickness.
And Charlie waited patiently for the moment he'd been invited in as Neville's lover, not just his boyfriend.
Three months waiting faded into insignificance as Charlie smiled down at Neville, the brunette so open and trusting below him. Lingering kisses had become passionate touches, and a trail of discarded clothes traced their path from the front door to bed. "Are you sure?"
Beyond words of devotion, coarse whispers of need and pleasure, nothing more was said. Charlie pushed in and out of silken heat, kissing Neville desperately as they both raced towards completion. Pulling Neville into his arms in the hazy aftermath, Charlie pressed a kiss into sweaty hair. "Can I stay?"
"Yes, as long as you like."
5) The Happy Ending
Neville's eyes rested on the beautiful black cherry orchids and he smiled. Charlie's ability to remember offhand comments from years ago amazed him, and warmed his heart to this day. Seven years and counting, and Neville doubted he'd ever been happier. His Gran loved Charlie, and his Mum always had a bubblegum wrapper for the redhead. After surviving a war, Neville was pleased and awed that Charlie was his reward, and that he was enough to be Charlie's.
Leaning back into the arms that appeared around his waist, Neville grinned. "Happy Anniversary."
"Same to you Neville, same to you."
